Ms Kirsten Farrell
Biography
I trained as a Diagnostic Radiographer at the University of Exeter, beginning my clinical career at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, before moving to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, where I specialised in CT and MRI. During this period, I completed postgraduate study at Birmingham City University in Forensic Radiography, Paediatric Imaging, and Research Theory and Practice.
I joined the 兔子先生 in 2011 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013, the same year I completed my Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and became a Fellow of Advance HE. I later undertook further postgraduate study with The Open University in Imaging in Medicine and Further Materials in Medical Physics.
In 2015, I was appointed External Promotion and Liaison Lead for the School of Health Sciences and Social Work, leading strategic activity across student recruitment, outreach, global engagement, marketing, alumni relations, and employability. This role strengthened my expertise in partnership working, external engagement, and widening participation.
I was appointed Associate Dean (Students) for the Faculty of Science and Health in 2021, following an interim period during the pandemic. I provide strategic leadership to enhance the quality of the student experience across a faculty of more than 5,500 students, focusing on student engagement, learning support, continuation, progression, and achievement. My portfolio includes oversight of Learning Support Tutors, Student Success Advisers, and a wide range of initiatives designed to improve belonging and outcomes, particularly for disabled and underrepresented students.
I contribute to the strategic direction of the University through membership of multiple institutional committees and working groups, including the Education and Student Experience Committee, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions Committee, and the University Mental Health Charter workstreams. I also chair the Faculty Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the Faculty Employability Group.
Alongside my leadership role, I am undertaking a Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD), exploring barriers to neurodivergent students accessing support in higher education. My research builds on my work in inclusive student success and policy development.
I am also Co-Chair of the Staff Neurodiversity Network, advocating for systemic change to create equitable and accessible working environments.
I am a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and an Associate Editor for the Student Engagement in Higher Education Journal.
