On 11 June we present two illuminating lectures in one evening.
In Metallurgy At The Heart Of Engineering, Professor of Metallurgy and Advanced Manufacturing, Soran Birosca, will explore metallurgy as the foundation on which modern technology is built 鈥 from steel frameworks that support our cities, to high-performance alloys in aerospace, energy systems and biomedical devices. He鈥檒l illuminate the path to materials that can withstand the most extreme conditions.
Professor Birosca says:
'As a key enabler of breakthroughs in mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, and even environmental engineering, metallurgy is critical in designing materials that are lighter, stronger, more durable, and more sustainable.
鈥業鈥檒l explain how 鈥渕aterial design by characterisation鈥 drives my research group鈥檚 efforts in developing new alloys and enhancing the mechanical and physical properties of advanced materials used in critical applications.

In When The Physics Behind Quantum Phenomena Meets Quantum Technologies, Professor of Physics and Quantum Technology, Vincenzo Tamma, will explain what鈥檚 happened since the first quantum revolution brought a new understanding of the physics behind everything we observe and the nature of our Universe itself 鈥 and he鈥檒l look at where this extraordinary field of research may take humanity next.
Professor Tamma says:
鈥楶henomena like quantum superposition 鈥 the ability of a particle to be in two states at the same time 鈥 have been puzzling scientists around the world, including Einstein, ever since the first quantum revolution.
鈥榃ith the advent of the second quantum revolution, quantum phenomena have triggered a global development of technologies, with the capability to provide strategic benefits to the security, health and wellbeing of our society.
鈥I鈥檒l describe how the research in quantum optics in my group at our UoP Quantum Science and Technology Hub is key towards achieving the ultimate precision in measuring physical parameters, such as time, position and colour. This has applications in biology, medicine, engineering, navigation, astronomy and environmental sensing, as well as reaching an exponential quantum computational speed-up beyond the capacity of classical computers.鈥
