A significant step towards the University’s journey to a more sustainable campus and net-zero has been made, with 24 fleet vans belonging to the University’s Estates and Campus Services department now fully electric.

The vehicles produce zero emissions at the tailpipe and zero indirect emissions thanks to the University’s 100% renewable electricity supply. The change will save an estimated 187 tonnes of COâ‚‚ over the lifecycle of the vehicles. That’s the same as:

  • Taking over 100 cars off ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s roads for a year
  • Powering around 70 homes for a year
  • Avoiding nearly 180 return flights from London to New York
  • The annual work of 8,500 trees capturing carbon

The vehicles are used across the campus and city, typically for short journeys to move equipment and respond to urgent issues, making the electric vehicles a sound environmental choice that reduces emissions in our city.

Investing in our future

The new electric vehicles align with the University’s ambitious sustainability goals, which include:

  • Becoming a net-zero University by 2040 by removing more carbon than it emits.
  • Modernising infrastructure to be more energy-efficient and sustainable.
  • Encouraging greener transport through EV charging, cycling facilities, and public access initiatives.

Building a sustainable future

As part of its Estate Masterplan, the University is investing in modern, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure to ensure campus developments align with ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s environmental goals. From EV chargers and improved cycling facilities to energy-efficient buildings and green fleet vehicles, these initiatives reflect the University's commitment to sustainability and community support.
