3 November 2025

5-6pm

Join us virtually as we ask if studying criminology has unintended consequences for romanticising crime.

There has been an explosion of interest in crime and studying criminology over the past decade, with increasing concerns and discussions in the media about the impact that this increasing interest can have.

The event will take place from 5pm- 6pm and the programme is as follows:

This webinar will explore some of the representations of crime in different aspects of culture (theme parks, dark tourism, crime-themed events, 'Crime Influencers' and crime in television), through understanding the impact crime has on culture.

We will then link this to the role that criminologists play in amplifying crime, particularly key scholars like Lombroso, Stan Cohen and Charles Murray.

In the end, we will try to answer the question, should we actually study criminology?
