Biography

Martin Andrews is Principal Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Art and Design at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and a Registered Architect (ARB).  He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and an experienced academic leader with over 20 years’ experience spanning architectural practice, teaching, research and international higher education.

Martin previously served as Associate Dean (Global Engagement and Education Partnerships) for the Faculty of Creative & Cultural Industries at the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, where he led international strategy, transnational education initiatives and institutional collaborations across Asia, Europe and the Americas.  He established and directed a transnational education top-up degree partnership in Hong Kong and has investigated and developed programmes with a focus on dual awards, validated and sub-contracted partnerships and facilitated funded international mobility programmes for students and staff.  

Martin's professional roles have provided him with regular opportunities to teach at higher education departments, schools and programmes in France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Norway, Singapore, the USA and across the United Kingdom. 

A passionate advocate for practice-based and problem-based learning, Martin founded and led the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s in-house architectural consultancy (the 'Project Office'), enabling students to work on live, fee-generating projects with public, private and third-sector clients.

He is committed to mentoring and guiding the next generation of creative designers, emerging educators, supporting curriculum innovation, and strengthening links between academia, industry and international partners.

Research interests

Martin’s research focuses on architectural and design education, professional identity (of architects and design educators) and tutor development.  He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and on professional platforms and presented his work internatioanlly at conferences, seminars and workshops.  He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Problem-Based Learning and contributes regularly as a peer reviewer to international journals.

Teaching responsibilities

Martin has been teaching in higher education since 2004 working with university students in the UK and internationally, across undergraduate and postgraduate architecture, interior architecture and design programmes.

He has taught and led modules from Level 4 (undergraduate) to Level 7 (postgraduate), including design studios, technology, professional practice, research preparation and dissertation supervision.  His roles have included Studio Tutor, Module Coordinator, Year Coordinator, Studio Lead and Interim Joint Course Leader.  Martin has authored and coordinated modules with cohorts ranging from small postgraduate design studios to large technology and professional proctice modules, some of which numbered over 150 students.

Martin's teaching practice innovately integrates practice-based and problem-based learning.  As the Founder and long-term Coordinator of the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Project Office, he embedded live, externally commissioned projects into the curriculum, enabling students and staff to work with a variety of public and private clients while developing their  professional, technical and collaborative skills.

Martin supervises dissertations and theses at undergraduate and postgraduate level and contributes to professional education, including Degree Apprenticeship (DA) assessment. 

Outside the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, in his role as an external Higher Education Consultant, Martin has advised UK and international institutions about the curricula of new undergraduate design degrees and postgraduate architecture (RIBA- and ARB-related) course development. 

Martin is currently an External Examiner for a UK undergradute architecture programme.  He has also been invited to teach, review and act as a guest critic at national and international institutions.

His teaching is consistently rated highly in student satisfaction surveys and he has been recognised through ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú awards for innovation, enterprise and educational excellence.
