Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
Accelerate innovation and growth through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership
Innovation should drive your business forward. A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) combines academic expertise, structure, and government funding to turn ideas into real commercial results. A KTP connects your business with specialist academic expertise and places a highly capable graduate (the KTP Associate) within your organisation on a full-time basis. The Associate leads a focused innovation project aligned to your growth plans, supported by academic insight, dedicated project resources, and grant funding. This combination helps you accelerate new product development, service innovation, or process improvement more rapidly and with reduced risk.
At a glance: what a KTP delivers
- Faster progress on new products, services, or technologies
- Access to skills and insight your organisation does not currently have
- A structured approach to tackling a critical business challenge
- Reduced project risk through government backed funding
- New capability that remains within your organisation
Why do businesses choose a KTP?
For us it's about true collaboration and finding people that want to go on this journey with us too and build capacity in our organisation long term. I think KTP works for us because of flexibility and someone who is able to benefit from the resources of ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University and gain a clearer balanced understanding of the commercial side of the business but also the research and development side of business. Developing an AI-powered mobile application, we need some sort of expertise. They can guide us in what area the AI can help us. It really brings a strong focus on delivering an output so that the work is really targeted and ensuring that we deliver something that has material value to the council in its work.
A KTP supports businesses that want to move forward but need extra time, specialist skills, insight, or capacity to do it well. A KTP is often used to tackle a critical challenge, unlock growth opportunities or deliver innovation that would otherwise be too difficult to pursue.

Case Studies
Many knowledge transfer partnerships are quite radical projects, quite innovative that take the company a big step forward. At Rethink we specialise in productivity. Anywhere where there's somebody doing something, we can measure that process and we can help drive efficiencies. As a business we have lots of data. We knew we needed to get it in one place and unlock the value. The Knowledge Transfer Partnership Scheme is intended to be a graduate scheme and it's very prestigious as well. We do tend to attract really good people for the position of associate. The University do all the searching for candidates. We got a really good calibre of people that understood what we were looking for. I'm really passionate about analysing data and getting more insights out of the data. My PhD was on data science and I like the overall collaborative nature of this project. Working with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú with the team, it was a great fit from day one. Times things just click. From marketing support to technical development the University's been there to help our associate and us if we have any questions at all. Its quite incredible. If there is something you are interested in being able to achieve but you would struggle to afford it then there is plenty of help. I try to maximise the benefits to each of the partners so I try to anticipate things that might go wrong and reduce risks. There's a whole system to support you for the success of this KTB project. We're a 100% remote company. Rushan fitted into the team perfectly. Before if you can imagine we were trawling through 7 million data points to try and build benchmarking points, now it happens automatically. Its enabled us to develop a technology that we maybe never would have developed at all. After my KTP, I've joined full-time at ReThink and we're building some really cool data products. We've stayed in touch with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and we've just been successful in our second KTP. So we're about to start the process again for a different hypothesis and a different set of work on data. The KTP is a very cost-effective way of getting research done in the University into a commercial business in a very short space of time to really upscale where we are. Every day is more than just a normal day in the office. Subsea Craft is an advanced maritime technology company. We have Victor, our main craft. We identified that we might be able to look at the data coming from all of the sensors on board and be able work out when something is going to break, before it breaks, that will save time, money, and potentially operators lives. So we needed knowledge about predictive maintenance and machine learning. The university does have a lot of experience about the artificial intelligence logarithms. And KTP does provide a brilliant chance to bridge the gap between the university's research and industry. It is very beneficial and it feeds back into our teaching and our research as well. In this case, there was a need for a software engineer. I did my Masters in Applied AI and Data Science. As a KTP Associate, I got the opportunity to work along with such a cutting-edge company and knowledgeable software engineers who come with a lot of experience. We have a monthly meeting between the university and the company. We also have a weekly based meeting together with the KTP associate. And then the KTP advisor from Innovate UK will also provide some guidance. I have supported over 200 projects. I work with the partners right through to execution and delivery. This KTP project has been very successful, great progress has been made and algorithms are being developed. It has enabled us to tap into a part of the market where we are able to push that price point of that maintenance programme way, way down. We would love to see a collaboration with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú continuing on beyond the end of the KTP.
How does a KTP work and how is it funded?
KTPs are part-funded by , making them a cost-effective mechanism for businesses to deliver innovation and transformation.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are eligible for up to 67% grant funding, while larger organisations will receive up to 50% grant support.
What the funding covers
KTP grants support the full delivery of the project by providing funding to cover a significant portion of the costs, including:
- The KTP Associate’s salary, cost of employment and training
- Academic expertise and supervision from the university
- Essential project costs, such as travel and consumables
- Access to facilities, including cutting-edge laboratories, equipment, and specialist resources
- Project management, finance monitoring, reporting, administrative and HR support
Why partner with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú?
The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has a strong and well-established track record of delivering successful KTPs across a diverse range of sectors.
Our approach is pragmatic, collaborative, and commercially focused. We work closely with senior leaders to shape projects that address genuine business priorities, and many organisations choose to continue working with us after their KTP concludes, building long-term partnerships beyond the initial project.
Why Work with the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú?
So innovation is a team event. We don't innovate alone. The best way to do this is with partnerships. And we bring together those social connections in the academic community and the business community. We work collaborative projects around the world, so that experience can be gained by industries by working. With the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú. Whether you talk about businesses, whether you talk about humanities, social sciences, engineering, we do some fantastic work in the area of space, in the area of defence, in the area of marine biology. We tend to have a team-based approach to co-develop the project, so it's not a templated approach. We don't see KTPs as a product that we sell. It's really important to reach out and see that if we can work, there's funding available if we could help you to find that funding and put that team together to help you solve your problems. The main advice I'd give people is just go for it. Get in touch with people at the university. The KTP team are fantastic. Come along, talk to them, find out what they can offer and go from there. There's bound to be an opportunity that will work for your organisation and the potential is just huge. You won't know until you give it a try. And get some key knowledge, some experience, the access to the fantastic equipment that they have for testing. It's been a great opportunity and we definitely encourage it.
Is a KTP right for your business?
A KTP is good if you want to:
- Grow through innovation
- Build technical or commercial strength
- Reduce the risks associated with R&D and change
- Develop in-house capability without increasing permanent headcount
You do not need a fully formed project to get started. Many businesses start with a challenge or ambition, and together we shape it into a clear, fundable proposal aligned to their goals.

We offer confidential, no obligation discussions to explore your goals and assess whether a KTP could be right for your business.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Projects that involve development, improvement, or the creation of new capabilities. This includes products, processes, services, and digital transformation. A KTP is particularly well suited to organisations with clear growth ambitions, a willingness to invest leadership time and a commitment to embedding innovation capability.
In general, if your business faces a strategic challenge that requires specialist expertise, structured delivery, and long-term impact, a KTP may provide an effective route forward.
No. You only need a challenge, opportunity, or area for development. We will work with you to shape the idea into a clear, well-defined project suitable for KTP funding.
A KTP is designed to be light on your time. The full-time KTP Associate leads day-to-day delivery, supported by the academic team, while your role is typically brief weekly guidance and decisions. Your input is strategic rather than operational, and the project often delivers efficiency, clearer processes and long‑term capability that saves more time than it costs. Commitment can be shared across managers, and many businesses find the time required is far lower than expected, while the value is far greater. Above all, you need to care about the project, because it is building your future innovation, competitiveness, and growth.
Many Associates do stay with the company after the project ends. They know your organisation well, have spent considerable time building new capability within your business, and often become a valued part of the team.
Funding applications are competitive but well supported. The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú has a high success rate and will guide you through the full application process and jointly develop the proposal with you.
The KTP Associate is the default project manager for the project but with extensive support from the university academic supervisor and its KTP Team. The project is also overseen by a Knowledge Transfer Advisor, employed by the funder, Innovate UK, to ensure funding is monitored and assessed. Progress is reviewed every four months through a Local Management Committee Meeting (LMC) to ensure momentum, quality, and impact.
